Why did I become a health coach?
A few years ago I started having chronic migranes, and I felt terrible ALL. the. TIME. Some days I would wake up and be fine and then all of a sudden I would have a migrane attack.
"What is a migrane attack?" you might ask. I migrane attack differs from person to person, and for me what was happening (well it still happens but not as often) is all of a sudden something would trigger a migrane and then sounds sounded louder and then... I would experience something called an aura where your line of sight is limited and if you try to focus you might see something that looks like a static television. After the aura I would feel just intense head and eye pain and then just start crying even if I tried not to and then for hours after I would probably throw up a few times and just be super nauseaus and dizzy. I was depressed and full of anxiey about doing anything because I might trigger a migrane. I tried many different medications and methods to prevent a migrane and finally I figured out a good combination of things that has helped me reduce the occurance of migranes and how long they last when I do get one. Migranes are often misunderstood, many people think a migrane is just a headace and that it can be taken care of with a glass of water and an over the counter pain reliever. Unfortunately a migrane is not just a headace its almost a whole body expirence, and there isn't widespread sympathy given for a migrane, the only people that can offer sympathy are other migrane sufferers. There is also a long list of things that can cause a migrane and triggers differ from person to person. All this being said its difficult to navigate a world where you are now a migrane sufferer and I wish I had someone to help me figure this all out minus the eyerolls and "it's just a headace" comments.
Finding your why.
Health. What is it? Why do you want it? When people think of health they tend to think immediately about their waist line and start conjuring up ideas like “maybe I should go on a cleanse” or “I need to work out more.” Sure a waistline can be a literal measure of an aspect of health, but it is only one topic in the many that surround our health. When you think of being a healthy person what do you imagine? What are the things you are able to accomplish? Is it something simple like getting through your day with enough energy to complete your tasks or is it something deeper like being around to see your grandchildren one day? It could be seeing yourself walk or run a mile without pain or shortness of breath. My vision is to see myself having enough energy to give full kindness to people around me. Saving my energy for good. Not focusing on things I can’t control, showing kindness to people even if they are not meeting me with the same. Focusing on what I cannot control might make me feel agitated and lose sight of my goals. It could lead to stress eating food dense in fats and sugars, or perhaps lead me to being so worked up that I forget to eat and then have even less energy to be kind. The reason you strive for health differs from person to person. Finding your why is important to find before you start your journey. I strive to help you find your why on your initial visit so that we can always go back to that when we lose focus. It’s also what we look for in your first session with me, so that even if you decide not to continue with a coach you still know your why.
Strengths Based Change
As a health coach, I use the principle of strengths based change. When you use the strengths within you its easier to take the steps to reach lasting change. Each and every person including you has their own set of strengths and can use them to learn new skills. Just as you use your strengths in other areas of your life you can use them for your health and wellness. If you are a detailed oriented person, maybe you would try cooking some new healthy recipes. If you are flexible person, than you can fit a small workout in at anytime. If you are open minded, maybe you will discover you want to try meditation. If you are a grateful person, than you will find that you already healthy in many categories of health. If you have perseverance, you will keep trying again and agian till you reach your goals. There are numerous strengths you hold within yourself! Take a moment to write them down.
